“XXX”

BREF RAPPEL: “Stunts ‘R Us.

James Bond he isn’t, but Vin Diesel’s “XXX” definitely slaps Pierce Brosnin’s pretty face with a steel gauntlet. It will be hard for the next 007 movie to come close to the stunt value and eye candy painted all over the screen in this film. Almost non-stop action from start to finish, with stunts taken to the edge like we haven’t seen before, popcorn lovers will likely see this more than once. Director Rob Cohen has taken the basic ingredients from just about every secret agent movie to date, tossed in some Mad Max and mixed it thoroughly with a topping of Schwarzenegger/Stallone sauce. Admittedly it’s all half-baked, but enjoy the ride. It really doesn’t matter that no human on earth could go through what the script calls for. Vin Diesel has the screen presence to carry off a few more of these types of films, but unless he get acting lessons, any role requiring character depth will be -well- out of his depth.

Du côté de la technologie, a huge musical score thunders through most of the footage, perfectly infused by Randy Edelman – one of today’s best composers. Adequate amounts of head-banging will keep the younger audiences nodding and be sure to stay for the credits. They have little to do with the film, but it’s a 2002 version of the 2001 ride through the rings of Saturn. The cine was strong, the stunts great and the digital work not obvious – which is by far the best compliment. Check out the avalanche scene. A lot of credit is due the production entities in Prague for giving the backgrounds some substance. They do know how to make films there.

Bottom Line – Simply put, “XXX” is your summer blockbuster. (2002)
