An
epic set against the backdrop of the declining western frontier and
the beginning of World War I, TRAILS of GLORY is powerful, action-adventure
on a grand scale that takes its audience on a journey from the wild,
wild west through the turbulent terrain of southern Africa.
“What’s past is done - and past undoing.”
Chris
Steyn, a young Boer exile - working as a cowboy in Texas - is approached
by Raymond Barrett to help transport a dozen bulls of a new, hardy
breed to South Africa. Chris hates Barrett - a former enemy - and
does not want to undertake the mission. However, he is induced into
doing so, partly because of the need to find work for himself and
his team of men - Jeff Hawkins, an older black cowboy born a slave,
Miguel Torres, a Mexican and Sean O’Brien, an Irishman - but mostly
because of the urging of Jeff who is eager to seize the chance of
going to Africa to come to terms with his own past ....

The
men embark on their journey, only to be arrested by German soldiers,
who board ship off the coast of German South West Africa, since
Barrett is an officer of the South African Reserves. The men are
hauled ashore. Barrett imprisoned. The cowboys spring him from
jail and escape with their bulls across the Namibian desert -
the roughest, most inhospitable terrain in the world... German
soldiers pursue Chris, Barrett, the cowboys and attempt to hunt
them down. The men, fighting for their lives, drive their bulls
on. Badly mauled, exhausted, they finally make it across the border
into South Africa only to discover the country is about to erupt
in civil war. Chris - faced with the dilemma of siding with former
allies, rebels hell-bent on establishing an independent Boer state,
or siding with the forces representing the new Union of South
Africa - chooses to side with the rebels... Before the fighting
commences, Chris meets up with a childhood friend, a young black
woman, Mandisi, now a schoolteacher. Friendship rekindled blossoms
into love. Mandisi pleads with Chris to abandon the rebel cause.
He is adamant in refusing. During an intense bombardment of Union
positions, her school is destroyed, Mandisi killed. Desolate and
heartbroken, Chris finally switches allegiance, vowing to stop
the rebels. He seeks the help of the cowboys and Barrett. Reunited
at last, Chris, Barrett and the cowboys ride out together once
more - into the thick of battle - and prove pivotal in helping
the Union forces defeat the rebel army. The film ends on a positive
note: Chris and the cowboys help rebuild the school to ensure
that Mandisi’s invaluable work continues. |
